Can Dogs Eat Apples?

Can dogs eat apples? In a nutshell, yes they can! Apples are packed with nutrients that can support your dog’s health. However, there are some dangers to be aware of, including the core and seeds. Steer clear of these pesky parts of the apples as they are toxic.

All apples should be given to your dog in moderation. Too many apples may cause gastrointestinal upset.

As with all foodie advice, we are not doggy nutritionists and every dog is an individual. What might be good for most might not be good for another dog. If you have any questions about your dog’s diet, including questions on apples please contact your vet.

If you see signs of an allergic reaction in your dog, including coughing, sneezing, swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, or other symptoms, stop serving your dog these fruits and contact your veterinarian immediate.

Can dogs eat apples? Here’s what else you should know about feeding apples to dogs.

How Are Apples Good For Dogs?

Apples are a low-calorie snack jam-packed with valuable nutrients. They’re perfect for snacks or rewards in moderation. Apples are low in protein and high in fiber which helps with their digestive health.

They also have a good source of calcium, phosphorus and vitamins A, C, and K. That’s not to mention the antioxidants contained in apples that help to prevent illnesses. Apples can also improve your dogs’ dental health and breath, too.

When Are Apples Bad For Dogs?

Stay away from the seeds and core of an apple. The seeds contain traces of cyanide, which is toxic. Quite a few seeds would need to be consumed to cause cyanide poisoning, but it’s why risk your dog’s health? Remove the seeds and stem for safety! The core of the apple can also present a choking hazard or, if swallowed, cause a gastrointestinal blockage.

Apples should be served in moderation because they contain sugar, and too many can cause an upset stomach or diarrhea

We also recommend steering away from apple-flavored products not designed for dogs. They often have sugar, artificial flavors, or chemicals that aren’t suitable for our pooches. Always read the label and avoid added sugars, artificial sweeteners such as xylitol.

How To Feed Apples?

Before feeding your dog an apple, give it a wash and remove the stems, seeds, and cores. The best step from here is to cut them into bite-sized slices.

Other ideas include freezing them and serve them as a refreshing summer snack or blend them up with other healthy fruits to make a tasty smoothie.

There are plenty of treat recipes online that include apples, such as our Gingerbread recipe.
