Southwick Beach lies immediately to the east of historic Shoreham Harbour, where the River Adur enters the sea. The beach here slopes gently into the sea and is mainly shingle, although at low tide, an area of wet sand and shingle is exposed. As is typical for this stretch of the coast, the beach is intersected by a number of wooden groynes. A significant amount has been spent on improving the sea defences here in recent years.
