Iron Age Roundhouse in the Yorkshire Dales
Situated in the north of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this lovely roundhouse offers guests the opportunity to explore miles of unspoilt open space and experience a bit of history at the same time. The creator of the unusual space, Anthony, has used original building techniques, handmade furniture, and wooden crockery to give the roundhouse the feel of a real Iron Age dwelling. While a few touches of style and comfort have been added, sustainability has not been compromised. The shower is solar powered and warmed by a paraffin burner, so don't expect a steaming torrent, and the wood burner indoors keeps guests cosy. Period lamps are used for lighting.
Outside, guests will find a couple more of Anthony's creations. The triangular Pit House is available for extra guests but is not let separately, so guests of the roundhouse will have privacy if it's just the two of them. The Pit House shares cooking and bathroom facilities with the roundhouse, so guests can all gather round the clay chiminea for some al fresco cooking, or make simple meals and quick cuppas on the gas hob. Of course, this being Cumbria, there are some cracking pubs around if guests would rather someone else did all the hard work, with the Fat Lamb a couple of miles away a local favourite.
If guests fancy getting out and about, they can take the local and rather special bus service. As well as being into ancient history, Anthony's a fan of more modern relics and a collection of vintage buses run from the farm into Kendal, Penrith, and over to Barnard Castle. Guests might hear work from the bus garage now and again from the roundhouse and meet guests of the farm's small campsite on the buses. There really is no need to take any transport to see the area's most spectacular sights though. Guests can hike for miles over the fells and take in the dramatic landscapes, then settle outside the roundhouse at night and watch the stars in the unspoilt night skies, as people here have done for millennia.
