Dean Forest Railway is a little steam-powered gem in the Forest of Dean, where dogs can ride with their owners on an all-day ticket!
The trains run between Lydney Docks and Parkend, with stops at Lydney Town, Norchard Station and Whitecroft. Each stop has a great walk nearby and Lydney Town, Parkend & Whitecroft have dog-friendly pubs or cafes near to the stations as well as forest walkies! There are circular forest walks from Norchard, Whitecroft and Parkend, a park/town walk from Lydney Town and a river/canalside harbour walk from Lydney Junction.
Do make sure to check the train timetables on their website before your visit so as to not be disappointed when the trains aren't running. The shop and museum are open every day (except Christmas Day) 11am - 4pm and are also dog friendly. I have marked the train 'usual' running times as the opening times on this listing to help, but please check their website to be sure!
On each platform there are dog water bowls and you'll often find the staff getting excited to greet your pup. The special stamped dog tickets are always a joy, and they do host 'dogs ride free' events throughout the year. We recommend coming early to catch the first train out and choosing a circular walk (maps available at the ticket desk at Norchard) from a stop of your choice.
You are welcome to sit outside the café at Norchard with your dog (fantastic Sunday Roast!), but please don't take them in. Dogs are also not allowed in the refreshment car on the train, or on the train seats please!
