Built by Henry VIII, Hurst castle was used as a prison in the 17th century, and the olayed a defending role in the 19th and 20th. There are exhibitions around the castle showing its history.
It also has great views of the Isle of Wight.
You can walk or take a boat to get from Keyhaven to the castle, and viceversa.
The castle is part of English Heritage.
Theres is nowhere off limits for dogs and they go free on the boats!

At the end of Hurst spit, you will find Hurst Castle – one of Henry VIII’s properties. It is accessible by the Keyhaven Ferry or you can walk along the Hurst spit – which is made of pebbles, so not very easy underfoot for those with little legs! The castle did experience a collapse to one of its wings in February 2021, so when we visited June 2021 it was only partially re-opened but at a reduced admission price which we thought was fair – we were excited we got to see some of the castle! Due to COVID restrictions we did have to follow a one-way system round but this helped us ensure we were able to explore all the nooks and crannies the castle had to offer. There are some narrow, steep stairs to navigate if you wish to venture up to the roof of the castle – which we do recommend to see the glorious views looking back across the spit and Keyhaven harbour. However bare this in mind for those humans and doggos with mobility issues when it comes to stairs – as they may need a helping hand to the top! There was a food truck serving refreshments with some picnic benches at the castle entrance. Toilets also available on site. Doggos to be kept on lead inside the castle.
