£1 to park- but a lovely and varied walk. There is a lake at the bottom, beautiful views at the top and the large pit pony sculpture to run over. Watch out- sheep graze here.

Parc Penallta, Hengoed
A dog friendly walk situated within the Caerphilly Country Borough Council area which is currently free to park due to the ongoing pandemic and the council is not servicing car park pay and display machines until further notice. However, in regular circumstances it is £1 for 2 hours or £2 for the whole day which is a good value fee for the different range of walk lengths available to take your companion on.
A good mix of gravel, tarmac and grass paths which range from short too long in length and steep too flat inclines which allows for on and off the lead walks. Walkable in any weather but can be muddy in the rain if you walk on certain paths. There are 3 walking trails which can be found on the “Green Spaces Caerphilly” website. As well as open space and lengthy walks for your furfriend to enjoy, the park is home to ‘Sultan the Pit Pony which is created on the old mining waste land and also the ‘High Point Observatory’ which gives you incredible views down the South Wales Valleys.
The facilities are minimal but enough to accommodate an outdoors walk. There are benches for resting, several ponds, toilets dog bins and picnic areas.
We do enjoy this walk and despite a handful of visits we’re still discovering new areas within the Park therefore it could easily suit a long day visit or short visits to complete the differing areas of the park.
If you’re local to the area there are a number of paths and cycle tracks which lead to Penallta Park. Along these paths you will find numerous ponds, woodland areas, benches and walkways which add to the picturesque location. If your dog is secure offlead and loves to play, there are always numerous dogs looking to make friends at the main field by Sultan the pit pony (located at the main car park). Sultan is one of the biggest land sculptures in Europe. A beautiful walk for all.
