Stunning Tarn Hows offers an accessible circular (1¾ miles) walk through beautiful countryside with majestic mountain views. A great place to walk or to begin your wider Lake District countryside adventure. There are also rare Belted Galloway cattle and sturdy Herdwick sheep grazing by the tarn.
Tarn Hows is located in the low level hills between the villages of Coniston and Hawkshead and is ideal for a walk or cycle trip from either. It's a favourite with both regular and first-time visitors to the area and is popular with artists and photographers who love the setting and the views.
Due to livestock grazing nearby, dogs are advised to be under close control.

If you’d like a pretty, family friendly (it’s even ok for pushchairs etc) walk, this is a good choice, if you’re a National Trust member you can use your card to pay for parking. It’s a looped easy to follow path.
For the more adventurous explorers, get your OS map out and use this as a starting point for longer walks. In warm weather there are areas to relax and picnic.
Dogs are supposed to be kept on leads, but aren’t always and there are often livestock, including cattle – the reason I mention this is that if you have a reactive dog like me, visiting here on warm holiday days isn’t always a good idea – it gets very busy, the path is quite small so hard to get space and also the walk is quite short – but it’s perfect if that’s what you want! We tend to visit early morning or my favorite time which is the early evening, when most of the visitors have gone home and you can enjoy the peaceful beauty of the area.
