Thatchers Bar and Lounge is a main High Street Pub , providing good beer, live music and Beer Garden
A pub by the name of the Thatched House existed on this site for around 150 years. Originally a two bar local, in 2002 the house received a major refit, including a new frontage and new name, Thatcher's. This is a good example of how a comprehensive refurbishment can modernise a pub without destroying its previous appeal or character. Now effectively a single open-plan area, the pub is still separated into three distinct areas, with a floorboarded room at the front of house and a large, comfortable lounge at the rear, which in turn is divided into an upholstered seating area opposite the bar counter and a raised, traditionally furnished, area in the rear extension, which may be used by both drinkers and diners. A patio garden runs down the right side of the pub. A choice of up to six cask conditioned ales sourced from both local microbreweries and national producers is offered. Live entertainment is now hosted on weekend evenings and there is an open mic night on Mondays. A pub quiz is held on the second Wednesday of the month and a meat raffle is drawn on Fridays. The pub is decorated with old metal advertisements and photographs of entertainers, including a collection of Laurel and Hardy memorabilia at the very rear of the pub, by the fish tank. A statue of Elvis Presley stands in the front bar.

We went out with the aim to have a Sunday roast as a family and originally went to the Clarence over the road which is also dog friendly and we had been to before. After sitting down in the Clarence we were told they don’t have Sunday Roast available and had a look through the menu. Nothing caught our eye so we decided to move on to somewhere else, still in search of a Sunday Roast. It was about 3.15pm and apparently many places stop serving Roast at 3pm, not really sure why as most people are busy during the day and would go for a big meal afterwards. I happened to remember Thatchers as being dog friendly and I had seen a few posters and signs up in their window before referring to a roast and we thought we’d go and try it.
We arrived and I went straight up to the bar to ask if they had roasts available. They stopped serving roasts at 3pm. 15 minutes too late. However, the lady said she’d go and speak to the chef and see what was available. The chef came out and asked how many of us there was and said he had lamp or pork if that took our fancy. We all chose lamb and settled down expecting a long wait.
Our drinks were served, Pepsi on tap was amazing and the best I’ve tasted in a pub what with most resembling brown water! Not 5 minutes later did our roasts come out of the kitchen and once the chef saw our dog he asked if she wanted some beef scraps. He very kindly brought out a small bowl of good quality beef bits and gave her a fuss which our dog very much appreciated! The lamb was delicious and all the food was lovely. The plate wasn’t full to the top like most pubs but the quality certainly was superb.
The pub has a vintage theme to it with a lifesize Elvis and many other Elvis wall hangings and memorabilia. It plays classic old songs rather than the modern pop found in most and it’s at a nice comfortable background music volume. The pub was quiet with what looked to be a few regulars at the bar and a couple of other dogs arrived after us. Overall it was a very positive experience and a pleasant surprise. We may just start going to the Thatchers instead of the Clarence for all our Sunday roasts from now on!
